The workhorse of garden fencing

Closeboard (feather-edge) fencing is built board by board on site rather than dropped in as ready-made panels — which is why it's the strongest, longest-lasting choice for garden boundaries, and the one we build most.

Every closeboard fence we install uses pressure-treated tanalised timber, with concrete or timber gravel boards keeping the boards out of the wet ground, and posts set properly in concrete. Straight lines, level tops, and a capping rail to finish it off.

If your old fence has blown down once too often, closeboard is usually the answer.

Concrete posts or timber posts — which should I choose?

Both done properly will last. Concrete posts won't ever rot and make future panel or board changes easier; timber posts look softer and suit period properties. We'll talk it through on the site visit and quote for what suits your garden — not what's easiest for us.

What are gravel boards, and do I need them?

Gravel boards run along the bottom of the fence and keep the boards out of the wet ground — they're the single biggest thing that decides how long a fence lasts. We fit concrete or timber gravel boards on nearly every job.

How long will a closeboard fence last?

Built with pressure-treated tanalised timber, gravel boards and solid posts, you should expect 15–25 years. Cheap dip-treated timber straight onto soil can fail in five.
